Barstow, CA - In case you missed it, this week U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) visited Barstow Community College. While at the college, he toured their Mental Health Services Program, for which Schiff helped deliver $750,000 in federal investments, alongside Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), to increase access to unmet mental health care needs in Barstow and surrounding rural communities.
While on campus, Schiff also participated in a roundtable with students from the Mathematics, Engineering, Science, and Achievement (MESA) program, which supports underrepresented students majoring in STEM who intend to transfer to a 4-year college or university. During the roundtable, Schiff heard directly from students on the issues most important to them and discussed his efforts in Congress to make life and education more affordable for Californians.
"In this increasingly technological world, in this reasonably small, global world that is now going to be severely disrupted by AI, having a solid education in these STEM fields is just essential. I think AI is going to transform the workplace in ways that we have really never seen before and do so with a speed that will be unprecedented also. And I think that really calls on people in Congress to think anew," said Senator Schiff.
