On the front page of today's Wall Street Journal: U.S. Manufacturing Is in Retreat and Trump's Tariffs Aren't Helping
Newly released data from ADP today reveals that the manufacturing sector shed an additional 8,000 jobs in January - another consecutive month of manufacturing job losses since Donald Trump took office. For companies with between 20 and 49 employees, employment levels fell to their lowest point since 2022.
Today, the Wall Street Journal wrote that "The manufacturing boom President Trump promised would usher in a golden age for America is going in reverse," and blamed Trump's tariffs for "pushing firms that buy foreign parts to raise prices or scramble for supplies."
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
"Today's jobs report is another stark warning of Donald Trump's faltering job market. Hiring has slowed to a near-halt, unemployment is still high, and the manufacturing sector is a wreck. Meanwhile, working families are being squeezed to afford everyday necessities like groceries, rent, and gas, as prices continue to soar. But instead of helping everyday Americans, Trump is doubling down on his reckless trade war. Trump won't clean up his mess so that working families can get some relief - he only cares about himself and his billionaire donors."
Despite promising a "manufacturing renaissance," Trump's tariffs have trashed the manufacturing sector. Prices are still sky-high, the job market is in turmoil - and Americans are fed up. Consumer confidence in January fell to its lowest level since 2014, and a majority of Americans believe the economy has become somewhat or much worse off since Trump took office. What's worse, two-thirds of voters now believe a middle-class lifestyle is unattainable for most Americans.
