In a move to bolster community resilience in Sudan, the European Union (EU) has announced the launch of three projects collectively valued at EUR 95 million. This investment aims to assist communities affected by displacement and conflict, enhancing livelihoods and protection in key regions across the country.
The package, implemented by three partners, the World Food Programme (WFP), Danish Refugee Council and CARE Netherlands, and funded by the EU, targets areas including Khartoum, Gedaref, Kassala, Red Sea, Northern State, Central and South Darfur, White Nile, River Nile, North and South Kordofan. These projects aim to benefit over 500,000 individuals through vocational training, small business grants, school feeding programmes, and essential protection services, such as safe spaces and shelters.
"This funding underscores the EU's commitment to supporting the resilience of the Sudanese population, prioritising the essential needs of vulnerable groups displaced by the armed conflict with a strong focus on children and young people, women and girls' said the EU's Head of Delegation to Sudan, Ambassador Wolfram Vetter. "By working alongside our partners with a long track record of working with communities in need in Sudan, we are proposing practical solutions to enhance economic and educational opportunities while strengthening community resilience."
Key components of the initiative include vocational training and start-up kit provision for small businesses for youth, cash assistance for vulnerable households, and support for micro and small enterprises. Strengthening social safety nets and referral pathways will ensure comprehensive protection and integration for at-risk populations.
Aligned with local priorities, these efforts address major challenges such as unemployment, food insecurity, and educational disparities. Special focus is placed on improving living conditions for children, young people, women, and individuals with disabilities through community engagement and empowerment.
Over the course of 48 months, the partnership aims to drive transformative impact and contribute to a more resilient and prosperous future for Sudanese communities.
