UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Drew Bennett, the Whitney MacMillan Professor of Practice of Private Lands Stewardship in UW's Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, has been tracking the development of virtual fencing technology for several years. He's quoted in a Riverton Ranger article, picked up by outlets including the Wyoming Tribune Eagle and Buffalo Bulletin, and says virtual fencing can be a beneficial tool for livestock producers for several reasons, including added flexibility in ranch management.

UW Professor Bryan Shuman spoke at the recent Snake River Headwaters Symposium in Jackson, according to WyoFile. While it has been a warm fall and winter, the Snake River watershed has gotten a bit more snow than elsewhere, he said. In fact, the data indicate "a sweet spot here in the West. This is what we've been referring to as the warm refuge. It's a region that is warming like the rest, but it's not necessarily warming as much."

Research by UW Professor Mark Clementz and colleagues showing that volcanic eruptions in the Andes resulted in global cooling millions of years ago continues to receive attention, including from Discover Magazine.

Sherrill Smith, the dean of UW's Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, is quoted in a Cowboy State Daily article about the shortage of nurses in Wyoming and elsewhere. Nursing schools across the country are routinely turning away qualified applicants because they lack capacity for more students.

A Wyoming Public Media report noted that UW's Pathways from Prison program will expand to the Wyoming State Penitentiary, and perhaps other correctional facilities, as a result of a $500,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation.

UW farm/ranch management specialist John Hewlitt is quoted in a Cowboy State Daily article about the decline of family-owned dairies. Dairy is only a small component of Wyoming's agriculture economy, Hewlett said, ranking 42nd of the 50 states. What it lacks in dairy production, it makes up in beef production, ranking 18th in cattle and calves.

The Sheridan Press and Sheridan Media published articles from UW's release about Josephine Walton, a UW senior from Sheridan, receiving a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

The Laramie Boomerang picked up UW's release about a new album released by UW Associate Professor Ben Markley.
