ATLANTA (April 22, 2026) - Today, Sen. Emanuel Jones (D-Decatur) issued the following statement in response to U.S. Representative David Scott's passing:
"I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend and colleague, Congressman David Scott. Georgia has lost a dedicated public servant, and I have lost someone I truly valued as a friend.
David's life was defined by service and purpose. From his early years in the Georgia General Assembly to his leadership in the State Senate and later in Congress, he worked tirelessly to expand opportunity and improve the lives of the people he represented. As Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, he brought both conviction and practical leadership to the issues that matter most to rural communities and our state's agricultural economy.
Over the years, I came to know David not just as a colleague, but as a man who valued people and relationships. Our paths crossed often, whether through the communities we both served in Henry and DeKalb counties or in moments where we stood together in support of causes that mattered deeply to Georgians. He was someone you could talk with, learn from and trust, and that is something I will always carry with me.
He was also held in high regard within Georgia's civil rights community, standing alongside leaders like Andrew Young and the late Hank Aaron, and he carried that legacy with humility, dignity and resolve.
My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Alfredia, his family, and all who knew and loved him. Congressman David Scott's legacy will endure in the lives he touched, the communities he strengthened and the example he set for those of us who had the privilege to know him."
