UWL Police Department celebrates six years of growth, connection, community service

When Chief Allen Hill joined the UW-La Crosse Police Department six years ago, he came with a clear mission: strengthen the department from within while deepening its connection to the campus community.

"From day one, we wanted to create a department that not only provides safety and security but also builds trust, engagement and belonging," Hill says. "I met with our team early on, and we set some big goals. Looking back now, I'm proud to say we've accomplished every one of them."

Among those goals were achieving department accreditation, upgrading technology and equipment, improving communication systems and creating stronger campus partnerships. Each of these initiatives has helped advance the department and strengthen its role as a trusted partner on campus.

"Among the department's many accomplishments, the achievement I am most proud of is leading the UW-La Crosse Police Department through the rigorous law enforcement accreditation process," Hill says. "This milestone affirmed our commitment to professionalism, accountability and continuous improvement. Earning accreditation placed our department among an elite group of agencies that meet nationally recognized standards for excellence. An accomplishment that reflects the dedication, integrity, and hard work of our entire team."

In recent years, the department has also focused on visibility and connection. The introduction of a bike patrol and the launch of community-based programs - like the bait bike initiative, which helps deter theft - have made officers more accessible and proactive.

Perhaps the most beloved addition is K9 Officer Bear, who joined the team in 2024.

"Officer Bear has become an instant favorite," Hill says. "He helps us connect with students in a really meaningful way. People get excited and happy when they see him, and that opens the door to conversations and relationships."

Community outreach has also become a hallmark of the department's culture. Officers donate food and funds each year for the campus food pantry, even turning the effort into a friendly competition with other campus departments.

Another favorite initiative, an annual ice fishing trip with international students, began in 2022 and continues to bring joy and new experiences to participants.

"For us, policing at a university isn't just about enforcement," Hill reflects. "It's about engagement, education and empathy. Every program, every upgrade, every relationship we've built has been about making UWL a stronger, safer, more connected community."
