Rep. Watson Coleman Celebrates Grand Opening of Revitalized Reading Center for Trenton Community

Today, Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) attended a ribbon cutting celebrating the grand reopening of the renovated Reading Senior Center in Trenton, New Jersey and gave the following remarks:

When the senior center closed years ago, it was a tremendous loss to the Trenton senior community. The road to bring it back was a long one - and not without bumps along the way. But Mayor Reed, the City Council, and Mercer County were committed to serving the community and to getting this center back up and running… and better than it was before.

The city secured $600,000 in federal American Rescue Plan money, which I was proud to vote for, and it was signed by President Biden. In addition, the county secured matching Community Development Block Grants that I fought to protect from cuts in the Appropriations Committee.

The Reading Senior Center is a shining example of what can be accomplished when city, county, and federal officials work together, with one vision, to deliver for the seniors who have given so much to our city.

People have asked me, "What has been the most rewarding part of your time in Congress?" It's days like this, when we can deliver results and give back to people who have put their hearts and souls into their communities.

The 11,000 square-foot facility will open its doors for the first time in over eight years, with its new operations and programs beginning Tuesday, September 15th. The Reading Senior Center will also become the new home of the City of Trenton Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Community Relations and Social Services, beginning Wednesday, September 16, providing seniors with convenient access to City programs and assistance.
