Fall Harbor Dredging Begins

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredges the Oceanside Harbor inlet to maintain safe navigation for vessels. In turn, the City benefits from the sand removed, which is placed on Oceanside beaches.

This year, the Army Corps, in consultation with the City, is shifting that dredge from its traditional spring timing to a fall operation. The change is a trial run, and the Corps retains the option to return to the spring schedule if needed.

The strategic shift in timing is expected to build a more resilient beach heading into winter. Placing sand in the fall allows northwest winter swells to carry it south, toward the stretches of Oceanside's coastline experiencing the most significant erosion, offering a protective buffer for beachfront infrastructure and recreational areas during what's shaping up to be a strong El Niño winter.

Shoaling in the Harbor Channel has also narrowed the safe navigation depth for boaters since the Corps' last dredge in May 2026. This operation restores that depth while advancing the new timing for beach sand replenishment.

Mobilization Begins

Equipment mobilization begins September 12. Harbor Lot #12, at the end of the harbor, is closed for the duration of the project for equipment.

Sand Placement Begins About September 15

Initial sand placement is expected to begin about September 15, moving to the area around the Pier by about September 18, and continuing south toward Tyson Street Park, depending on weather and ocean conditions.

Approximately 380,000 cubic yards of sand is expected to be dredged from the Harbor channel and placed on Oceanside beaches.

The overall operation is expected to wrap up around October 20.

Please use caution on the beach near equipment, staging areas, and marked pathways throughout the dredge operation.

Residents should also be aware of two other nearby projects running this fall: bracing work on the Oceanside Pier hammerhead is set to begin in October, and the Downtown Water and Sewer Replacement Project Phase II will continue along the Strand, where the North Strand will close to through traffic, accessible only to residents and emergency vehicles due to heavy equipment.
