Leadership from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) convened with energy sector partners last week to chart the future of domestic resource innovation during an industry roundtable at NETL's Oil & Gas Center of Excellence in Pittsburgh.
Under Secretary of Energy Kyle Haustveit joined laboratory researchers and industry partners, including commercial representatives currently partnering with the Center of Excellence, for facility tours and high-level discussions focused on modernizing critical energy infrastructure.
"The work taking place at the Center of Excellence bridges fundamental science with practical field deployment," Haustveit said. "Collaborations like today's roundtable ensure that DOE's research portfolio directly addresses our nation's energy security priorities while accelerating technologies across the industry to produce affordable, reliable, and secure energy."
Discussions centered on research initiatives underway to enable secure, efficient, and low-impact oil and gas systems through integrated research aligned with DOE priorities and industrial needs. Participants examined ways to align federally funded research with both core department goals and private sector operational demands facing current and prospective industry collaborators.
During the laboratory tour, attendees observed advanced sensor demonstration, enhanced oil recovery technologies, next-generation combustion research, and innovative produced water treatment solutions, highlighting NETL's efforts to strengthen energy infrastructure, improve resource recovery, advance water management, and accelerate deployment of secure and reliable energy technologies.
The Oil & Gas Center of Excellence serves as a collaborative hub within NETL, connecting government researchers, academic institutions, and commercial partners to accelerate next-generation subsurface engineering solutions.
NETL is a DOE national laboratory dedicated to innovating and accelerating the nation's energy solutions in hydrocarbons, geothermal energy, and critical minerals production. The Lab further strengthens its impact by engaging with industry, academia, and other stakeholders through four strategically located Centers of Excellence: Coal, Critical Minerals & Advanced Alloys, Oil & Gas, and Geothermal. With research sites in Albany, Oregon; Morgantown, West Virginia; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, NETL operates as one laboratory to create advanced energy technologies that support DOE's mission and enable affordable, reliable, and secure energy to fuel human prosperity.
