HANDS OFF THE MILITANT SOLDIERS
As the International Workers' Institute (IWI), we join our voice with the anti-imperialist movement in Greece, demanding that the government stop the persecution and imprisonment of militant soldiers and reserve officers who participated in a KKE demonstration and addressed a greeting to the farmers' mobilizations in Greece.
The units of sailors, airmen, and soldiers of the land army who marched in their military uniforms in Athens and Thessaloniki with the central slogan "Soldiers are the children of the people - they have no business outside the country's borders," showed an anti-imperialist spirit and gave a direct answer to the Greek government's plans to send troops to support NATO's plans in Ukraine.
Soldiers serving their term are not puppets of the imperialists. They are the children of workers and farmers. In the history of class struggles, there are positive examples where soldiers united with the popular movement. They refused to strike demonstrators. These militant soldiers deserve congratulations for their courage.
Yesterday's decision by the Ministry of National Defense to impose a 25-day prison sentence on Special Forces soldier Manos Papageorgiou is unacceptable. It must be taken back immediately. The penalties and threats of the government have a double goal: on the one hand, to intimidate soldiers and officers who do not submit, and on the other, to slander the KKE.
