ASPPH recently joined hundreds of national, state, and local organizations in a joint sign-on letter calling on Congress to conduct swift and robust oversight of recent changes to the US childhood vaccine schedule announced by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). These changes were made without a transparent, evidence-based review process and departed from long-standing recommendations that have played a critical role in protecting children and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases.
The abrupt revisions to the schedule risk creating confusion for families, clinicians, and public health systems, while also raising concerns about vaccine access, insurance coverage, and public trust. Of particular concern is the growing influence of anti-vaccine sentiment among HHS leadership, which threatens to undermine decades of scientific progress and hard-won gains in population health. Routine childhood immunizations have saved millions of lives and prevented widespread illness, hospitalizations, and long-term health consequences.
ASPPH remains steadfast in its commitment to science-based immunization policy and to the integrity of transparent, expert-driven public health decision-making. We will continue to closely monitor federal actions affecting vaccination policy and advocate alongside our members and partners for policies that protect children's health and strengthen public confidence in public health systems.
