Limited awareness of AI regulations among developers raises potential concerns for healthcare rollout

A study led by researchers at NTU Singapore's Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine has found that many developers creating artificial intelligence (AI) tools for healthcare have limited familiarity with regulations designed to ensure the trustworthiness of these technologies.

4 out of 10 developers from Singapore, China, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom surveyed were not aware of any regulatory frameworks, raising potential healthcare concerns when implementing medical AI tools.

The survey also revealed that almost 7 out of 10 of the organisations that the developers worked for have not adopted any regulatory frameworks.

The findings suggest that training and mentorship to improve developers' awareness of AI regulations as well as the harmonisation of the various regulatory jurisdictions may be crucial for the safe, ethical and effective deployment of AI in healthcare.
