In new PSA, the FDNY reminds New Yorkers about important electrical safety information

April 16, 2026

In a new Public Service Announcement (PSA), the FDNY is reminding New Yorkers about important electrical safety information.

So far in 2026, there have been 29 fire deaths, which is up from the same time in 2025. Nine of the 29 fatalities have been from fires caused by electrical issues.

Stay safe in your home by practicing smart electrical practices:

  • Never overload power strips or extension cords.
  • Don't keep or use frayed wires.
  • Plug large appliances directly into wall outlets.
  • Make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
