Omics are being increasingly considered for regulatory applications, but debates over regulatory readiness often distract from the more important issue-determining what constitutes sufficient evidence for different regulatory decisions. The question is no longer whether omics is ready for regulation, but what level of evidence is required for a particular regulatory use. To support environmental decision-making, omics data must be transparent, reproducible, biologically anchored, and linked to outcomes relevant to environmental protection. Rather than pursuing universal regulatory acceptance, a fit-for-purpose framework recognizes that confidence should be determined by the intended regulatory application and the evidentiary requirements necessary to support that decision. Such a framework offers a practical pathway for determining when omics data are sufficiently robust for applications ranging from mechanistic investigations to quantitative risk assessment, shifting the discussion from universal acceptance toward decision-specific qualification.
