SCAN Health Plan and Sutter Health Deepen Strategic Collaboration to Advance Medicare Advantage in Northern California

LONG BEACH, Calif., and NORTHERN CALIF. - SCAN Health Plan, one of the nation's largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage Plans, and Sutter Health, a not-for-profit, integrated healthcare system, today announced the next phase of their strategic collaboration to expand access to coordinated care across 10 Northern California counties for Medicare-eligible patients.

SCAN and Sutter co-branded products will now be available in San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo and Sonoma counties beginning in 2027. These products have been available in Alameda, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Yolo counties.

Moving beyond a traditional payer-provider relationship, SCAN and Sutter are working together to shape benefits, the patient experience and clinical care models. The collaboration combines Sutter's high-quality care delivery network with SCAN's nearly 50 years of experience serving older adults.

"Patients deserve healthcare that is simple to navigate, connected and centered on what matters most to them," said Sutter Health President and CEO Warner Thomas. "By working closely with SCAN, we're able to offer older adults more choices and a more seamless experience, helping connect their health coverage and care together to support healthier aging and better outcomes."

"As more Americans age, we need stronger connections in healthcare to better meet their needs," said Dr. Sachin H. Jain, CEO of SCAN Group and SCAN Health Plan. "Our work with Sutter is grounded in a shared belief that when a health plan and provider align around what matters most, we can deliver better care, a better experience and greater value for older adults. This kind of alignment is critical to supporting Medicare-eligible patients today and for years to come."

A key part of the work is Sutter Senior Advantage, a SCAN Medicare Plan (HMO), the organizations' co-branded Medicare Advantage plans. Launched in 2026, these plans now serve more than 20,000 members and combines SCAN's Medicare Advantage expertise with Sutter's clinical network to better connect members' health coverage with the care they receive.

Sutter Senior Advantage members will have access to:

  • Sutter's hospitals, physicians, urgent care centers and specialty care services.
  • $0 copays for Tier 1 and Tier 2 prescription drugs.*
  • $0 preventive dental and allowances for routine vision care.
  • Unlimited $0 virtual mental health visits.
  • Fixed-cost hearing aids for members with chronic conditions.
  • Over-the-counter benefits for health and wellness items.

Beyond benefits and network access, members have access to dedicated SCAN service advocates trained on Sutter's system and care model, personalized onboarding and benefit education. The support is designed to make it easier for plan members to understand their coverage, navigate care and get the help they need.

Sutter and SCAN share a not-for-profit, community-based focus centered on serving Medicare beneficiaries and improving the health and well-being of the communities they serve.

In 2027 and beyond, Sutter and SCAN will continue identifying opportunities to jointly shape benefits, patient experiences and care models, building a more connected Medicare Advantage experience that supports quality, affordability and the evolving needs of Northern California's growing older adult population.

* Prescription copayment/coinsurance may vary by plan, county, pharmacy type, day supply, Part D benefit phase, or for members who receive "Extra Help."

SCAN Health Plan is an HMO plan with a Medicare contract. Enrollment in SCAN Health Plan depends on contract renewal.

Other providers are available in SCAN Health Plan's network.
