Statement from Mayor Todd Gloria on City Council's Unanimous Vote to Ratify
Data Center Moratorium in San Diego
MAYOR: "This is the right decision for our city"
SAN DIEGO, CA - Mayor Todd Gloria issued the following statement after the City Council voted unanimously to ratify a temporary moratorium on data center development in San Diego:
"I appreciate the City Council's unanimous ratification of the temporary moratorium on data center development. This is a necessary and responsible step to make sure any development does not outpace our responsibility to protect San Diegans.
"Data centers can place significant demands on electricity, water, land and infrastructure. San Diego welcomes innovation, investment and the jobs that come with them. What we will not do is ask residents to absorb unnecessary costs or neighborhood impacts.
"We can support innovation and protect San Diegans at the same time, and that is exactly what this moratorium allows us to do. This is the right decision for our city."
The temporary moratorium was advanced as part of an Executive Order signed by Mayor Gloria on October 22. The order directed the City Planning Department to bring forward the temporary moratorium for ratification by the City Council. The temporary pause gives the City time to assess potential impacts on water supplies, electricity demand and costs, housing opportunities, infrastructure and surrounding neighborhoods before any data center development could move forward, within the City's jurisdiction.
The City Planning Department was also directed to establish a Data Center Stakeholder Working Group to help recommend comprehensive regulations governing the location, development, construction, operation and potential expansion of data centers in San Diego. The working group will consist of technology experts, community advocates, utility and water professionals, housing and land-use experts and other stakeholders.
City departments are required to provide preliminary recommendations to the Mayor and City Council within 180 days.
