Southfield Honors 25 Years Since September 11th, 2001

Today, September 11, 2026, marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks that took nearly 3,000 lives in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. A quarter century later, the City of Southfield joins communities across the nation in pausing to remember.

A Day That Changed the Country

On the morning of September 11, 2001, four coordinated attacks unfolded within the span of about 90 minutes. The World Trade Center's Twin Towers fell. The Pentagon was struck. And in Shanksville, the passengers of United Flight 93 fought back, preventing a fourth attack from reaching its intended target. Nearly 3,000 people died that day, including 343 New York City firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers who ran toward danger instead of away from it.

The date has since been observed as Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Flags are traditionally flown at half-staff, and many communities mark a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. the exact moment the first plane struck the North Tower.
