Tales Take a Dark Turn in Midnight’s Talebound

Red Hollow draws unwitting travelers into its fold; prepare to be pulled into the tales of a mysterious Storyteller whose favorite stories lean toward the macabre in Midnight's new game mode, Talebound, coming with the Echoes of the Worldcore content update.

Whether you venture alone or with friends, Talebound invites you to explore themed levels filled with enemies, bosses, puzzles, treasure, relics, and rewards-and face the terrors waiting just beyond the next page.

Quillgrave: Your Haven from Horrors

Between each horrific adventure, return to the cozy, lantern-lit village of Quillgrave, which offers warmth and respite from the darkness beyond. Take a rest, hang your cap, and sip some hot cocoa, but don't get too comfortable; the village and the storyteller don't appreciate a story unfinished, so you'll have to strategize for the horrors to come.

Once rested, take up arms and endeavor through the telling and retelling of tales that will test your new skills and abilities… and there are so many tales to tell and re-tell.

Talebound will launch with four stories to explore, each with its own settings, enemies, and boss encounters, including witches, giants, marshals, bishops, deep-sea horrors, and nightmare royalty.

  • Darkhaven: Home to Konrad von Sonnesheim, The Lord Marshal, and Alexandre Dozsenc, The Blood Bishop.
  • Greenthistle Wood: Houses Granny Greenthumb, Witch of the Woods, Ylska Vilefang, Witch of the Wilds, and Mobog, The Giant of Greenthistle.
  • Greywake's Expedition: The tale of the many who have fallen to Zzyg'th, The Hadal Tyrant, and Chathoa, The Herald from Beyond.
  • Grove of the Night Court: A frightening chronicle of Tilywth, The Fairy Queen, and Maernok, The Nightmare King

Collections of these stories are also available in town, if you wish to hear them again.

Take a Look at the Talebound Classes

Across all classes, movement and defense are central, and every class can double jump, dodge, and guard, making positioning a key part of combat.

Slayer

The Slayer's martial might and monster hunter knowledge give him the rare physical tools to combat the beasts of folklore. Wield a sword to cut down eldritch foes and a gun for when a blade doesn't suffice

  • Slash: a sequence of three attacks that damage enemies directly in front of you, with higher damage and stun on the final blow. In Talebound, lesser enemies flinch when attacked, making for dynamic combat.
  • Explosive Shot: Fire your shotgun at enemies in front of you. Closer foes take damage from multiple shots. Empower this ability to deal greater damage.
  • Minefield: Allows you to leap backward and hurl an arc of mines in front of you. These mines inflict damage and slow your enemies.
  • Shrapnel Round: Fires multiple rounds at enemies, bouncing between foes and inflicting damage to each it hits.
  • Throwing Knives: Moves the player quickly and strikes nearby enemies. It can cancel other attacks for fast movement.
  • Silver Bolt: Leap into the air and drive a silver bolt into your foe, immediately inflicting damage on the enemy with the highest health in range.

Inquisitor

The Inquisitor's zeal lights every corner and burns the face of evil, no matter the illusions it uses to hide.

  • Purify: A sequence of three attacks that damage enemies in front of you, each strike more powerful than the last.
  • Condemn: Damages enemies in front of you, inflicting holy damage and reducing their movement speed. Crucially, it is castable while moving.
  • Denounce: An empowered ability that inflicts more damage the longer you stand and forces enemies to confess.
  • Light's Wrath: Conjures a wrathful sun above an enemy, burning enemies nearby.
  • Rapture: Wreathes enemies in damaging flames for a short time. These flames detonate on your command.
  • Radiant Burst: Can be cast while moving to hurl fire at a nearby target that explodes on impact, burning all nearby enemies.

Witch

The Witch uses lightning, poison, spiders, moonlight, thorns, and ravens to overwhelm enemies with a darker, spell-driven style.

  • Brewing Storm: A sequence of three attacks that inflict lightning damage, with the last strike dealing more serious damage.
  • Bubbling Cauldron: Summons a plague of frogs from your cauldron. Frogs leap to a random enemy and explode, inflicting poisonous damage in a small area.
  • Feline Communion: Transforms you into a cat for a short time. While in this form, a shower of stars inflicts damage to all nearby enemies, and you may cast Crooked Path to blink forward, escaping through moonlight.
  • Winter Spiders: Summons a swarm that skitters forward, including a brood mother that explodes, inflicting serious damage in a small area.
  • Moonlight Ravens: A channeled spell used while moving to summon a flock of ravens that each seek out nearby targets, inflicting damage to them.
  • Thorns: Launches thorns that erupt beneath the two nearest enemies.

A Market to Make Survivability Possible

After each run of a tale, return to Quillgrave to work together with the Arcanist, Scribe, Outfitter, and Antiquarian to improve your odds in your next attempt.

  • Arcanist: provides new potions, draughts, and flasks to be found throughout the tale.
  • Scribe: provides talents that change the abilities used to best your foes.
  • Outfitter: improves your starting health, damage, energy, and focus.
  • Antiquarian: provides meaningful passives that augment how each tale may be approached.

A Telling Tale Isn't Without Its Rewards

As you temper the horrors of the tales before you, earn fashionable rewards like the Ensemble: Witch Hunter's Shadow Attire transmog set, furnish your home with haunting decor like the Quillgrave Storyteller's Lectern and Quillgrave Talebound Shadowtome, or soar into your next adventure on the pages of the Shadowbound Storybook mount, and much more to use in Midnight and beyond.

The village of Quillgrave awaits, and the stories are far from finished. The Storyteller is waiting, and the fire is lit. Gather around the campfire and prepare to lose yourself in Talebound's macabre tales.

Look for an early preview of Talebound on the PTR sometime in October.
