Allegheny Health Network Opens Second, State-of-the-Art Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Forbes Hospital

MONROEVILLE, Pa.-Allegheny Health Network (AHN) today announced the opening of a newly renovated, second cardiac catheterization lab at AHN Forbes Hospital, significantly expanding the hospital's ability to deliver advanced, life-saving cardiac care close to home for patients in eastern Allegheny County and surrounding communities.

The project marks the completion of a six-month renovation that has fully modernized Forbes Hospital's second cath lab, complementing the first cath lab, which was upgraded three years ago. An advanced electrophysiology lab and hybrid operating room, complete with a new reception area and post-operative recovery rooms, were constructed prior to the completion of the cath labs.

Together, the two labs support Forbes Hospital's growing volume of cardiac patients and reinforce its role as a regional destination for high-acuity heart care.

"By expanding our capacity and upgrading to the most advanced technology available, we're ensuring patients in eastern Allegheny County can receive timely, high-level cardiac care without having to travel downtown."

The new cath lab at Forbes features the Philips Azurion FlexArm, the company's most advanced X-ray imaging system. The system offers enhanced imaging, flexibility, and precision, allowing physicians to perform more complex cardiac procedures while improving efficiency and patient safety.

In addition to upgraded imaging, the lab was designed with a dedicated anesthesia workspace, a feature not typically found in cath labs. This capability will allow Forbes Hospital to expand its procedural offerings to include advanced interventions such as Watchman™ procedures to reduce the risk of strokes associated with atrial fibrillation, all performed with full anesthesia support in a purpose-built environment.

"For patients experiencing a heart attack, every minute matters. Having two fully equipped cath labs helps us deliver rapid, life-saving care when it's needed most."

Cath labs play a critical role in diagnosing and treating heart disease, including evaluating chest pain, identifying blocked coronary arteries, and performing urgent interventions such as angioplasty and stent placement during heart attacks. Forbes Hospital's cath lab teams are available around the clock, with on-call staff able to mobilize within 30 minutes for emergency cases.

Last year alone, Forbes Hospital performed approximately 1,400 cardiac catheterization cases, a number that continues to grow annually. The expanded capacity helps ensure patients can be treated quickly, even during peak demand, and supports Forbes' ability to care for the region's aging population.
