2025 Hispanic Film Festival

Ohio Wesleyan to Showcase Four Acclaimed Movies During Free Festival Oct. 21-Nov. 12

DELAWARE, Ohio - Ohio Wesleyan University's 2025 Hispanic Film Festival kicks off Oct. 21 with free showings of four acclaimed movies from Spain and Latin America that celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity and foster a deeper understanding of pressing social issues.

Sponsored by OWU's Department of World Languages and Cultures and its Film Studies Program, the festival celebrates the richness and plurality of Hispanic cinema and encourages dialogue among guest artists, students, faculty, and other viewers.

All films will begin at 7 p.m., be screened in their original language with English subtitles (if needed), and be followed by a discussion about their cultural and artistic significance. Admission is free for everyone, with all films screened in Room 312 of Ohio Wesleyan's R.W. Corns Building, 78 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. Films may contain mature themes and language.

Ohio Wesleyan's 2025 Hispanic Film Festival includes:

Oct. 21, "Chinas" (2023, Spain). In Madrid, Spain, Lucía and Xiang, two 9-year-old Chinese girls, meet at the beginning of the school year. This drama is written and directed by Arantxa Echevarría. (1 hour, 58 minutes)

Oct. 29, "Upon Entry" ("La Llegada") (2022, Spain). When Diego and Elena immigrate to the U.S., they are held and interrogated by border agents determined to see if they have something to hide. This drama was written and directed by Alejandro Rojas & Juan Sebastián Vásquez. (1 hour, 17 minutes)

Nov. 4, "Alice Júnior" (2019, Brazil). When teenage YouTube sensation Alice Junior moves from big city Brazil to the conservative countryside, she learns to harness the power of her trans identity and fulfill her dream: landing her long-overdue first kiss. This drama-romance-comedy is directed by Gil Baroni and written by Luiz Bertazzo and Adriel Nizer. (1 hour, 27 minutes)

Nov. 12, "La Suprema" (2023, Colombia). In a small town without even electricity, a teenage girl dreams of being a boxer. When she learns that her uncle will box for the world title and the event will be broadcast live on television, she and the community will go out of their way to watch the fight, while fighting for her dignity and against oblivion. This drama-comedy is directed by Felipe Holguín Caro and written by Felipe Holguín Caro and Andy Sierra. Caro will participate in a Zoom conversation with the audience after the screening. (1 hour, 23 minutes)
