Grown-Up Field Trips Explore Alexandria's African American History

African American history is recognized throughout the year in Alexandria-discover it firsthand through a special four-part adult field trip series. Modeled after popular school programs but expanded for adults, these evening experiences offer extra time to examine objects and primary sources, engage in conversation, and participate in hands-on activities that deepen understanding of Alexandria and American history.

Two programs remain this spring:

April 10 - Hayti: Uncovering an African American Neighborhood
Alexandria Archaeology Museum,105 N. Union Street, Studio #327 | 6:30-8 p.m.
Explore the historic Hayti neighborhood through archaeology and material culture. Participants will examine artifacts and learn how archaeologists uncover stories of African American communities that once thrived in Alexandria.

May 8 - African American Stories at Alexandria's Archives and Records Center
Archives and Records, 801 S. Payne Street | 6:30-8 p.m.
Go behind the scenes with original documents, photographs, and records that illuminate African American life in Alexandria. This hands-on experience offers a rare opportunity to work directly with primary sources and discover how archives preserve community stories.

The series also included earlier programs at Freedom House Museum and the Alexandria Black History Museum, creating a citywide exploration of African American history.
