Rep. Marcus Wiedower to Resign from House of Representatives

ATLANTA - State Representative Marcus Wiedower (R-Watkinsville), who was first sworn into office in 2019, announced today that he will be stepping away from the Georgia General Assembly to focus on a rapidly expanding business opportunity with Hillpointe, where he serves as vice president of external affairs.

While serving in the General Assembly, Wiedower held multiple committee assignments but is most proud of his work as chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government, where he collaborated closely with state agencies to ensure they had the proper resources and funding to effectively serve Georgians. He also served on the Higher Education Committee, an assignment that held personal meaning as his district includes part of Clarke County, home to his alma mater, the University of Georgia. In addition, Rep. Wiedower enjoyed his role on the Transportation Committee, where he focused on improving infrastructure and connectivity across the state.

Wiedower's decision to step away from public office comes as Hillpointe experiences unprecedented growth and national expansion. When he joined the company six years ago, Hillpointe operated in just one state, and Wiedower was the sole employee in its external affairs division. Today, Hillpointe has expanded to 13 states, representing a 1,200 percent increase in market presence, and Wiedower now oversees a team of dozens of employees, consultants and contractors in 13 states spanning from Virginia to Arizona.

As Hillpointe's rapid growth continues, Rep. Wiedower explained that the company's expansion will require an increased amount of travel that would physically take him away from the State Capitol during session. He shared that it would not be right for his district to go without a full voice and vote during critical days of the legislative session and that stepping away now is the best way to ensure his constituents remain fully represented.

Speaker of the House Jon Burns (R-Newington) commended Wiedower's decision, saying, "Marcus loves representing his district in the State House, and I know this decision could not have been easy for him. We appreciate him bringing this to our attention early so that a special election can be called quickly to ensure the people of Oconee and Clarke counties can continue to have a strong voice in the House."

Throughout his tenure, Wiedower has built a reputation as a results-driven leader focused on improving outcomes for families and communities. As he transitions from public service to the private sector, his commitment to bettering the lives of Georgians remains steadfast.

Representative Marcus Wiedower represents the citizens of District 121, which includes portions of Clarke and Oconee counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2018 and currently serves as Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government. He also serves on the Higher Education, Motor Vehicles, Natural Resources & Environment, Technology and Infrastructure Innovation, Transportation and Ways & Means committees.
