Generous Donor Underwrites the Food Cost for the MNPD's Christmas Basket Program

As the men and women of the police department begin preparing for the Christmas Eve deliveries of food and toys to 425 families in need across Nashville as part of the 64th annual Christmas Basket Program, a first-time community supporter has come forward with an incredibly generous donation.

After hearing a presentation on the Christmas Basket Program and its impact on the community over more than six decades, Wesley Financial Group founder/owner/CEO Chuck McDowell asked about the cost of providing four bushel baskets of food staples to each family in need. The answer: $65,000, a $10,000 increase over 2024. Mr. McDowell's immediate response was to write a check covering the entire $65,000 food cost.

"There's no reason a single person or family should go without food in a great city like Nashville," said McDowell. "I grew up in Hendersonville and my family relied on the goodness of others many times to survive. I'm more than happy to give back and challenge others in our community to do the same."

"Sixty-four years ago, two caring police officers got together and decided to brighten the Christmas of two less fortunate Nashville families by bringing them gifts of food," said Chief John Drake. "That was the beginning of a proud tradition in this police department that has not faltered over the passage of time. I am so grateful for community partners like Chuck McDowell who understand the mission of the Christmas Basket Program and are moved to help in truly meaningful ways."

Families are chosen largely at the recommendation of police officers who come into contact with them during the year.

Note: Chuck McDowell and his wife, Jo Ellen, recently donated $100,000 to One Generation Away in Williamson County to help them provide families who lost their SNAP benefits. The McDowells, who also own Medical House Calls, are also doing a match program up to another $100,000 between now and end of year for One Generation Away.
