Rep. Bera Introduces Bipartisan National Day of Play Resolution to Promote Healthy, Active Communities

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) introduced a bipartisan resolution with Representative Mike Flood (NE-01)to designate the first Saturday after the Spring Equinox as the National Day of Play.

National Day of Play is a community-driven effort to encourage device-free, outdoor activities that foster social connection, improve public health, and strengthen neighborhoods. The initiative aims to address rising rates of social isolation and sedentary lifestyles by encouraging Americans to unplug from their devices and reconnect with their communities.

"National Day of Play is a bright spot at a time when so much of what we're seeing across the country feels heavy and discouraging," said Representative Bera. "This initiative is about tackling the growing epidemic of social isolation and encouraging our kids and all of us to put down our phones, get outside, and connect with one another. I'm proud to introduce this bipartisan resolution with Congressman Flood and I look forward to working together to get it over the finish line."

"This effort to raise awareness about the importance of play in childhood development has a simple message: It's time to get kids off screens, get outdoors and to engage in play away from technology," said Rep. Flood. "Kids age eight on up are using screens over seven hours a day, leaving the next generation more connected to a digital world and less in touch with real people and physical surroundings. Thanks to my colleague Congressman Ami Bera for leading this effort and I look forward to continued bipartisan work in this area."
