Fire Paramedic John Garza passes awaydetail

He knew our community well, not only from the many years of calls to every part of the city. He graduated from Tempe High School in 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Liana Garza, and two children, Johnny and Maya.

"Firefighters risk themselves to provide lifesaving services to our community every day," said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods. "On behalf of the entire City of Tempe, I would like to express sincere condolences to Fire Paramedic John Garza's family, and thank them for the service he provided."

"Just over 20 years ago, I had the honor of going through the recruit academy with John while serving as the recruit training officer for Tempe. From the very first day, I was drawn to him - that big laugh, his quick wit, and the way he could instantly make you feel like you'd known him for years. John had this special warmth about him that you don't come across often. He had a genuine kindness that made people feel seen and appreciated," said Interim Chief Deputy City Manager Greg Ruiz. "Over the years, whenever I'd run into John, it was like no time had passed - the same smile, the same laugh, the same big-hearted energy. He had a way of lifting everyone around him, and the world feels a little dimmer without him in it. I feel truly lucky to have known him, and I'll always remember the joy and friendship he brought to everyone he met."

"The loss of Firefighter Paramedic Garza is felt deeply throughout our department and community. John was the kind of person whose smile could light up a room. His sense of humor made even the toughest days a little easier. He always put others first and embodying the very best of what it means to be a public servant. His commitment to Tempe was a calling, and he answered it with courage, compassion, and humility," said Interim Fire Chief Darrell Duty.

He added, "John and I shared a bond as proud graduates of Tempe High School, forever Buffaloes at heart. We often talked about those days, laughing over memories and reflecting on how far we'd come. He was not only a great firefighter, but a great friend. John was someone who lifted others up and led by example. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the spirit he brought to every call, every conversation, and every moment in service."

Details for services are forthcoming.
