UPMC to Host Annual 'Walk to Remember' for Infant Loss Awareness Month

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Sept. 29, 2025) - October is Infant Loss Awareness Month. UPMC Magee-Womens in Central Pa. will host its annual "Walk to Remember" memorial service on Sunday, Oct. 5, at Woodlawn Memorial Garden, 4855 Londonderry Road, Harrisburg. The walk begins at 2:30 p.m. and offers families a chance to gather in remembrance of babies lost during pregnancy, shortly after birth or in the first months of life.

The event is open to anyone, regardless of when their loss occurred.

Losing a baby through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or neonatal death can cause feelings of grief, helplessness, shock and numbness. In the United States, a miscarriage is typically defined as the loss of a baby before the 20th week of pregnancy, while a stillbirth refers to the loss at 20 weeks or later. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 24,000 babies are stillborn each year in the U.S.

UPMC in Central Pa. offers a support group for those grieving the loss of a baby. Expressing emotions and receiving compassionate responses are vital steps in the healing process. Caregivers at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospitals are trained to provide individualized support and resources to help families navigate their grief.
