LOS ANGELES - Mayor Karen Bass today announced a strategic LAPD deployment in Downtown LA. The announcement comes on the heels of a street takeover that was followed by an incident at Circa LA Apartments.
Mayor Bass was joined by LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, Central City Association President and CEO Nella McOsker, Downtown LA Residents Association Co-founder Cassy Horton, and other Downtown leaders and residents. The deployment includes a combination of patrol cars, horse patrols, foot patrols, and undercover units to protect everyone who lives here and visits the Downtown L.A. area.
"Here is a message to anyone who thinks they can come Downtown and cause trouble: LAPD will be Downtown in force to arrest you," said Mayor Karen Bass. "What happened at Circa LA Apartments is despicable. And we have zero tolerance for street takeovers. We are fighting, everyday, to build back our economy. After decades of failures by the City, my Administration led the way to break ground on a modern, competitive convention center. It's a catalytic investment - I will not let anyone come Downtown and derail our progress."
"This weekend's incident in the Figueroa and LA Live corridor was extremely disturbing, and the concerns raised by residents, businesses, and visitors are absolutely justified," said LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell."Our message today is simple: the Los Angeles Police Department is fully committed to maintaining safety and stability in this vital part of our City. We have increased visibility, strengthened enforcement, and expanded our partnerships to deter criminal activity and hold offenders accountable. The public deserves to feel safe in these neighborhoods, and we will remain present, responsive, and engaged."
"Downtown Los Angeles must be safe and welcoming. Not just because it's home to 90,000 residents, swells to 400,000 daytime workers, and welcomes 18 million visitors annually - but because this economic engine generates a third of the city's essential tax revenues," said Nella McOsker, President and CEO of Central City Association. "Targeted public safety investments like this help breathe life into our city budget and greater Los Angeles economy."
"I am confident that today will mark the beginning of a deeper level of collaboration between Downtown residents and the City on the issue that matters most to us: public safety," said Cassy Horton, Co-founder of the Downtown LA Residents Association. "Public safety is what makes everything we love about this neighborhood possible. Real commitments have been made today, and they represent the kind of partnership between residents and civic institutions that our neighborhood has needed for a long time."
Since taking office, Mayor Bass has prioritized the revitalization of the Downtown L.A. region by working directly with residents and business owners to address their public safety concerns and investing in projects to spur economic growth. We are already seeing results - three organizationshave chosen Los Angeles as the location for their annual conferences following Mayor Bass' approvalof the LA Convention Center (LACC) Modernization and Expansion Project. These conferences will bring roughly 55,000 people to Los Angeles who will help generate an economic impact of nearly $100 million and deliver approximately $3.4 million to the City of Los Angeles' General Fund.
