On 2 June 2026, Mrs. Sirilak Niyom, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, had discussions with H.E. Mr. Hayashi Teiji, Ambassador for Mekong Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, during the latter's visit to Thailand.

Both sides discussed ways to advance bilateral relations between Thailand and Japan, particularly through high-level exchanges and preparations for the commemoration of the 140th anniversary of the establishment of Thailand - Japan diplomatic relations in 2027. They also discussed advancing cooperation in the Mekong sub-region under the Mekong - Japan Cooperation framework, including sustainable development, connectivity through quality infrastructure, food and energy security, addressing environmental challenges in the subregion, and combating transnational crime. The Japanese side commended Thailand's active role in combating online scams, a significant challenge facing the region. The Japanese delgation also visited the Anti Cyber Scam Center (ACSC) at the Royal Thai Police Headquarters.

Both sides exchanged views on the Thailand - Cambodia border situation. The Deputy Permanent Secretary reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to maintaining the ceasefire agreement and utilizing bilateral mechanisms to resolve issues peacefully through dialogue. They also discussed the situation in Myanmar, with Thailand reiterating its readiness to work closely with Japan in providing humanitarian assistance to Myanmar and supporting the country's return to peace and reconciliation following the general elections, through the calibrated re-engagement approach.
