5G Innovation region project places Ayrshire at heart of digital transformation

The region received £4.4million from the UK Government's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) team in 2024 to become one of ten 5G Innovation Regions (5GIR) across the UK.

And a report, commissioned to assess the impact of the 5G Innovation Region Project, says the funding and support has positioned Ayrshire at the forefront of digital technology.

The report highlights how the 5GIR programme has not only helped create new digital systems across key businesses and sites in Ayrshire but also helped bring together public, private and academic partners to support long-term digital growth, collaboration and innovation across the region.

Some of the other highlights of the project include:
• the rollout of 25 advanced wireless network solutions
• the project has attracted £1.6 million of additional private sector investment and £360,000 in SME match funding
• generated an estimated £7.76 million in gross value added (GVA) through productivity gains, infrastructure improvements and innovation activity
• Over 200 individuals have been upskilled in advanced digital technologies, helping to future-proof Ayrshire's workforce and ensure businesses can make the most of new connectivity opportunities.

This enhanced connectivity at key locations such as Ayr Low Green, Dean Castle Country Park and Irvine Harbourside has improved visitor experience, public safety and event delivery, demonstrating the wider community benefits of digital investment and enhancing tourism across the region.

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council and chair of the Ayrshire Economic Joint Committee, said: "Digital innovation is central to Ayrshire's future, and by working closely with our partners, we're positioning the region as a leader in digital connectivity.

"We are delighted with the work that has been carried out. There are really strong foundations in place and we have everything there to deliver long-term, inclusive economic growth

"It's now important that we continue to work with our partners and business community to build on what we've achieved so far in a relatively short period of time. This momentum will now be carried forward through the Ayrshire Digital Economy Ecosystem (ADEE), connecting infrastructure, innovation, skills and inclusion so the region can turn today's progress into long-term economic opportunity."

The report also underlines the importance played by "industry digital champions" - organisations that are already demonstrating real-world benefits of advanced connectivity, helping to build confidence and encourage wider adoption across the region.

The learning and momentum generated through the 5G Innovation Region project is now directly informing the £14 million Ayrshire Growth Deal Building Digital Capital programme. The next phase of investment will build on the success of the 5GIR by expanding advanced digital infrastructure across Ayrshire ensuring the region continues its journey toward becoming an innovative, digitally advanced and highly attractive location for inward investment.
