In its annual College Guide and Rankings, Washington Monthly once again gave Frostburg State University high marks. FSU was ranked 107th in the Northeast in the "Best Bang for the Buck" category and 75th in the country overall in the "Master's Level Colleges and Universities" category. This designation places Frostburg 4th among public universities in the state.
"At Frostburg, we work hard to make sure our students' access to affordable excellence is a top priority," said interim president Darlene Brannigan Smith, PhD. "Our faculty and staff should be commended for their dedication to the University so that we remain a beacon of innovation in our region."
The College Guide is included in the September/October 2025 issue of Washington Monthly, a bimonthly nonprofit magazine that covers U.S. politics and government.
On this year's list of master's level colleges and universities, the publication includes 585 institutions that award a significant number of master's degrees but few or no doctoral degrees. This year, the best bang for the buck listing ranked 369 schools according to how well they help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.
According to the website description of the rankings, "We rank four-year schools (national universities, liberal arts colleges, baccalaureate colleges, master's universities) based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories - social mobility, research and providing opportunities for public service."
