Cantwell Statement on Vote to Require Congressional Authorization For Military Operations in Venezuela

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released a statement after voting yes on Senate Joint Resolution 98. The joint resolution - which she co-sponsored - would direct the removal of U.S. armed forces from hostile actions against Venezuela that have not been approved by Congress.

"President Trump's actions in Venezuela have set a dangerous precedent. It's certainly not worth U.S. blood to commandeer oil that is not going to lower prices at the pump. My hope is Republicans will continue to join Democrats in reasserting the role of Congress."

The joint resolution was discharged from committee by a 52-47 vote and now awaits final Senate passage.
