Pennsylvania Releases Comprehensive Energy Assessment

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Energy Programs Office (EPO) has released the Pennsylvania Comprehensive Energy Assessment (CEA), a statewide, data-driven analysis of the Commonwealth's energy landscape. The CEA is intended to inform state policy and program development and strengthen energy outcomes for Pennsylvanians.

The assessment comes as Pennsylvania faces growing electricity demand, projected to accelerate over the next decade as data centers are built to meet the needs of an increasingly digitized world. Much of the Commonwealth's energy infrastructure was built decades ago for lower annual peak demand and different environmental conditions. Given these trends, the CEA examines current energy resources and future scenarios to help inform policy and investment decisions that balance reliability, affordability, resiliency, and economic and environmental impacts.

The CEA reviews historical and current energy conditions in Pennsylvania and evaluates potential future energy resources and pathways through 2050. The report is organized into three main sections:

1. Pennsylvania's Current Energy Outlook and Future Potential
2. Recognizing Pennsylvania's Key Energy Resource Potentials
3. Energy Opportunities and Future Considerations

Building on previous Commonwealth energy reports and policy efforts, the CEA incorporates recent data analysis and a forward-looking perspective on Pennsylvania's energy future. It identifies four themes that highlight opportunities to leverage Pennsylvania's energy strengths, support family-sustaining employment, ensure reliable and affordable energy, and reduce pollution:

1. Expanding Workforce Opportunities
2. Investing in Energy Security and Reliability
3. Advancing Affordability and Reducing Energy Burden
4. Reducing Emissions and Improving Health
