Altura Capital Team Visits Miami’s Historic Freedom Tower

Community Engagement

The Altura Capital team toured Miami's iconic Freedom Tower, reflecting on the city's immigrant history and the enduring impact of resilience, education, and opportunity.

Last week, the Altura Capital team had the opportunity to visit Miami's historic Freedom Tower, one of the city's most powerful symbols of hope and resilience.

From 1962 to 1974, the Freedom Tower served as the Cuban Refugee Center, often referred to as the "Ellis Island of the South," welcoming hundreds of thousands of Cubans fleeing communism and political persecution. The Tower provided critical support, including housing, healthcare, and education, helping families rebuild their lives and shape the Miami we know today.

The experience was made especially meaningful through a guided tour led by Madeline Pumariega, President of Miami Dade College. Her personal reflections, along with stories of families whose journeys began within those walls, brought the history of the Tower vividly to life.

The visit served as a reminder of the immeasurable contributions immigrants have made to this country and reinforced the importance of expanding access to opportunity for future generations.

Altura Capital is grateful to Madeline Pumariega, Julie Vives, Austin Hollo, and Alfred Sanchez for making the visit possible, and for their leadership in strengthening Miami's business and civic community.
