Under Trump and Rollins, Fertilizer Costs Continue to Skyrocket Arrow

As Trump's war with Iran continues with no end in sight, farmers are struggling to keep up with rising costs

As Donald Trump continues to wage his unpopular war of choice with Iran, prices including gas, diesel, and fertilizer are soaring. America's farmers are struggling to deal with the rising cost of fertilizer, with only 48% of Midwest farmers being able to afford it. Meanwhile, Trump and his Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins have not proposed any initiatives to immediately bring down the cost of fertilizer and bring relief to farmers since Trump started his war with Iran nearly 70 days ago.

More than two weeks ago, Rollins said the administration was acting "with urgency" to bring down fertilizer costs - but the primary initiative the administration has announced on fertilizer costs could take one to two years to materialize - and farmers need relief now.

Farmers were already struggling to get by under Trump because of his unhinged trade war that caused family farms to go bankrupt at the fastest pace in five years in 2025, spiking by 46% from 2024, alongside record-high farm debt. Now, nearly 60% of U.S. farmers say their finances are getting worse as fertilizer and fuel costs rise.

In response, DNC Deputy Executive Director Libby Schneider released the following statement:

"America's farmers were already struggling to get by under Donald Trump and Brooke Rollins and now Trump's war with Iran has pushed farmers to a breaking point. Trump tanked the agricultural economy with his reckless trade war, causing family farms to go bankrupt at record levels, and now his deadly and costly war with Iran has caused prices on everything from diesel to fertilizer to skyrocket. Farmers are scraping by to make ends meet under Trump - and Trump and Rollins have done nothing but turn their backs on them."

The American Farm Bureau Federation and other major agriculture groups sounded the alarm on Trump's war with Iran in a letter, writing, "the closure of the Strait of Hormuz sent fuel and fertilizer prices skyrocketing - further straining a farm economy that already had its back against the wall due to record inflation, trade uncertainty, rapidly declining crop prices and catastrophic natural disasters."
