SALT LAKE CITY - Airline passengers flying out of Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) who do not have REAL ID-compliant identification by Sunday, Feb. 1 will have the option to pay a $45 fee before being screened at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint.
The fee covers the cost of a modernized alternative identity verification system, called TSA ConfirmID. The verification will cover a 10-day travel period for most travelers who plan round trip flights.
"While most travelers provide acceptable identification, it is our responsibility to confirm that passengers are who they claim to be," said TSA Federal Security Director for Utah Matt Davis. "Ensuring the safety of the traveling public continues to be our highest priority."
Acceptable forms of ID include:
Utah travelers without an acceptable ID are encouraged to visit the TSA ConfirmID program feesite and pay the $45 fee prior to travel on or after Sunday, Feb. 1. Passengers should show a printed or electronic copy of the receipt to the transportation security officer verifying identification at the airport checkpoint.
At SLC, 95.3% of passengers already use their REAL ID or other acceptable forms of identification. However, on an average travel day, officers at SLC checkpoints encounter about 1,300 passengers who do not provide acceptable forms of ID. TSA expects wait times will increase for those passengers when TSA ConfirmID goes into effect.
TSA's list of acceptable forms of ID can be found at TSA.gov/travel/security-screening/identification.
