Professor Lisa Meierotto and her co-researchers recently published an article for The Conversation that examined how increased immigration enforcement is affecting agriculture and public opinion in Idaho, a state that relies heavily on immigrant farmworkers and strongly supported President Trump.
Their research found that despite broad support for tougher immigration policies nationally, Idaho residents - including nearly 80% of Republicans surveyed - favor creating a pathway to legal work status for long-term immigrant dairy workers and their families. More than half of respondents also believe increased immigration enforcement would harm the state's agricultural economy, highlighting a disconnect between federal immigration policies and local attitudes in farming communities that depend on immigrant labor.
