Bobcat Bulletin Student Spotlight highlights students who are successful inside and outside the classroom. This edition of Bobcat Bulletin features Emilee Ritchie '27.

Hometown: Frostburg, Md.

Major: Elementary/Middle Education Specializing in Science

Why did you choose to attend Frostburg State University?

I chose FSU because it is close to home. I wanted to stay close to my friends and family, so Frostburg State was the best option for me. I also liked the size of the school; I can tell that my professors know, and truly care about their students, which isn't always guaranteed at a larger university.

What extracurricular activities were you involved in?

I am a member of two education clubs on campus, FSEA and FAEYC. I also coach a youth club volleyball team at FSU and a local high school volleyball team.

What is your favorite memory as a student?

My favorite memories have all been created at my job on campus. I am a student employee at the Frostburg State University Store, so I get to have fun conversations with other students every day. I have created some lifelong friendships with the coworkers that I've had over the last three years.

Which faculty and/or staff member has influenced you as a student?

Dr. Jodi Eirich '97 has played a huge role in my journey as an education major. She is not only an amazing professor, but she is also a great advisor. She has always gone the extra mile for me, she supports and works with her students, and she has made great efforts to get to know each of her students.

What advice would you give to a student currently studying your major?

The best advice I have for anyone majoring in the education field would be to remember your "why". People may speak negatively about becoming a teacher but remember that you chose this path for a reason. It won't always be easy, you will have large workloads, and you won't always receive the acknowledgment for the difference you are creating. Think of the students who need a role model like you, think of the difference your effort can make in a child's life, this will make everything worth it in the end!

Tell us about a class or activity at FSU that has had a surprising effect on your life.

A class at FSU that has had a surprising effect on my life would be my IDIS course. I took this class my freshman year and only enrolled in it because it was required. The course I took to fulfill this requirement was The Science of Learning. Dr. Holly Currie did a wonderful job teaching me that learning doesn't happen in five minutes; learning is a process that you need to put time and repetition into. She also taught me that it's not only okay to take time for myself, but it is actually a crucial step in the learning process. Your brain needs breaks! This information has helped me over the past few years, and I have completely changed my view of what homework and studying should look like.

What is a cause dear to your heart?

A cause near to my heart would be the Allegany County Animal Shelter. My Professor/Advisor, Dr. Jodi Eirich '97, has had a large role at the animal shelter, and she has put forth great efforts to teach her students about what we can do to help these animals. A few years ago, my family learned about a dog who needed a new home thanks to Dr. Eirich. In February of 2023, we adopted my dog from the animal shelter as a gift for my mom. Since then, my family has donated food, clothes, blankets, and money to the animal shelter to help the staff and animals as much as we have been able. I wish everyone would consider adopting instead of shopping the next time they are looking for a furry friend!

What do you do for fun?

I enjoy spending time with my friends and family in my free time. We love activities like going to concerts, taking long walks, meeting up for dinner, and playing pickleball and tennis.
