Defendant Convicted of Shooting Murder at Carmichael Apartment

On April 7, 2026, Larell Weathers was convicted by jury of second-degree murder, shooting at an inhabited house, and felon in possession of a firearm. The jury also found true allegations that Weathers used a firearm causing death and that Weathers suffered a prior conviction for residential burglary. The jury also found true two aggravating factors.

On June 21, 2021, Weathers was armed with a loaded handgun when he went to a Carmichael apartment and confronted a man who was in a dispute with his sister. Weathers forced the man to sit on a bench outside the front door of the man's apartment. The victim, Marcellus Cory Baker-Lee, was inside the apartment at the time. When the victim started to open the front door, Weathers shot at the door, killing the victim. Weathers immediately fled the scene and the firearm Weathers used was never recovered.

Weathers faces a maximum sentence of 61 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for May 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in Department 12B before the Honorable Ernest Sawtelle.
