Sudan: Arrival of additional humanitarian aid under the “Italy for Sudan” initiative

Following the distribution of essential food supplies (including pasta, flour, beans, rice and oil) delivered over the Easter period by a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, further essential goods that arrived by sea in Port Sudan are now being distributed. The aid includes family tents, waterproof tarpaulins, mosquito nets, mattresses, water jerrycans and storage tanks, kitchen sets and hygiene kits, for a total of approximately a further 70 tonnes of assistance, destined for 4,245 displaced families across 31 camps in the Red Sea State region. Distribution in the camps has begun and will continue over the coming days.

"Since the launch of the Italy for Sudan initiative, Italy has mobilised over 130 tonnes of humanitarian aid and more than EUR 6 million in contributions for emergency initiatives, and we intend to further expand this support. We must work more resolutely to urgently achieve a cessation of hostilities and ensure humanitarian access to the civilian population," stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani.

Launched in response to the recent escalation of the Sudanese civil war, "Italy for Sudan" represents a further step change in Italy's humanitarian engagement in support of the Sudanese population, through an integrated approach involving the Italian system, leading humanitarian organisations and civil society.
