The Light in Your Eyes by Miami-based artists Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt of R&R Studios features illuminated elements, a vibrant pink color palette, and integrated public seating, creating a dynamic and welcoming space for the community.
As the first city-sponsored public art installation in the 6th District since redistricting, the project was made possible by the work of the passionate General Services staff and comes just in time for Kansas City's massive influx of visitors brought on by the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
"Kansas City is on the world stage, and it's our workers who continue to make our city shine," said 6th District Councilmember Johnathan Duncan. "Great public amenities like this public art piece are made possible by our dedicated city workers."
Inspired by antique lamps and lampposts around Kansas City, The Light in Your Eyes forms a whimsical new landmark in the Waldo neighborhood. The piece invites Kansas City residents and visitors to play, connect, and dream of a brighter, collective future.
"Today we celebrate the creativity, character and community that is Waldo with the installation of Light in Your Eyes," said 6th District Councilmember Andrea Bough. "As with all public art, this piece creates a sense of place, connects neighbors and welcomes visitors, reflecting the light in us all."
Elected officials, General Services staff and Waldo Area Business Association representatives celebrated the installation with a ribbon cutting Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
Wednesday also kicked off Waldo Wednesdays, a new summer series of events to celebrate the neighborhood and its businesses and residents.
Waldo Wednesdays take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 24, July 1, and July 8 at the South parking lot at 75th and Wornall in front of Waldo Pizza.
Attendees can expect entertainment, various activities, and pop-up vendors.
