Topeka, Kan. - National Chemistry Week is Oct. 18 - 24, an event coordinated annually by the American Chemistry Society. The Washburn University Chemistry Department invites students in grades 10 - 12 to join them 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in Stoffer Science Hall on the Washburn University campus, to celebrate with a day devoted to the wonders of chemistry. This event is free with registration required, https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/vWTGXrBnaR. Parents/Guardians or students 18 or older are asked to register by Oct. 19.
"National Chemistry Week is designed to help reach students in kindergarten through high school with activities that celebrate chemistry," said Dr. Shaun Schmidt, professor and chair of chemistry, Washburn University. "Chemistry literally binds us all together, and events like this help illustrate the fundamental importance and utility of chemistry in our everyday lives. The high school students who come will be given the opportunity to explore chemistry as an option or a pathway to build towards their future career."
The theme for National Chemistry Week 2026 is "Chemistry Under Construction," and the chemistry department has built a day of activities that includes demonstrations of state-of-the-art instrumentation, trivia games, a tour of Stoffer Science Hall and lunch. At the conclusion of the day, a few Washburn University Chemistry Department scholarships will be awarded.
The event is sponsored by Washburn University, including the Washburn University Chemistry Department and Chemistry Club.
