UW’s SER Kicks Off Spring Distinguished Speaker Series with INL’s Simon Pimblott

Simon Pimblott

Simon Pimblott, a Laboratory Fellow at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and chief scientific officer for the Nuclear Science and Technology Directorate, will be the first featured speaker in the School of Energy Resources' (SER) Distinguished Speaker Series Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Pimblott will speak from noon-1 p.m. in the UW Energy Innovation Center's Encana Auditorium. The free lunch presentation is open to all students, members of the campus community and the public.

With more than 40 years of experience in the field of nuclear energy sciences, Pimblott has worked closely with the U.S. Department of Energy and the United Kingdom (UK) Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

Prior to joining INL in 2017, he was the Chair Professor in Radiation Chemistry and the founding director for the Dalton Cumbrian Facility (DCF) at the University of Manchester. The DCF was established to address the engineering decommissioning and scientific challenges associated with the UK nuclear industry and, particularly, the Sellafield site.

Pimblott is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and of the Royal Society of Chemistry; chair of the Materials Science and Technology Division of the American Nuclear Society; and is the newest member of the Nuclear Advisory Committee, which helps guide SER's Nuclear Energy Research Center (NERC) and academic initiatives at UW.

"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Dr. Pimblott to campus to share the story of his distinguished career and his pioneering work in the nuclear sector on a global scale," says SER Director of Outreach Christine Reed. "As the newest addition to the NERC advisory committee, we also are looking forward to connecting him with the faculty and staff that are working hard to provide innovative research and academic opportunities for UW students in the emerging nuclear industry in Wyoming."
