Marion City Council Members to take Ceremonial Oath of Office on January 8

Those elected to serve on Marion City Council in the November election will take a ceremonial oath of office on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. It will be the first order of business during the regular City Council Meeting at the Linn-Mar Education Leadership Center, located at 3556 Winslow Road in Marion.

Sara Mentzer will begin her second term as Ward 4 representative and Kelvin Unemin will begin his first term as At-Large representative. Grant Harper will begin his first full term as Ward 2 representative. Harper was appointed in 2020 as an At-Large representative and, following ward boundary changes related to the 2020 census, was elected to represent Ward 2 in 2024 for a two-year term.

Mayor Nicolas AbouAssaly will administer the oaths of office. A reception with light refreshments will be held from 4:30-5:15 p.m. in the atrium at the Linn-Mar Educational Leadership Center.

The Marion City Council is made up of seven members, including the mayor, who serve staggered four-year terms. Other members include Mayor Nicolas AbouAssaly, At-Large representative Steve Jensen, Ward 1 representative Gage Miskimen and Ward 3 representative Will Brandt.

In compliance with State code, the City Clerk administered the official oaths prior to Jan. 2, 2026.
