To continue delivering the highest quality water possible to residents, firefighters and Stafford County businesses, Utilities crews conduct hydrant flushing on a rotating basis throughout Stafford County yearly. From September 29, 2025, until early December, crews will flush hydrants in the southeastern area of Stafford County in the Falmouth and George Washington districts. This includes areas that are south of Eskimo Hill Road and mostly east of Richmond Highway. The flushing process cleans the water system by opening the fire hydrants to increase water flows, allowing crews to "flush" any minerals and sediment that naturally accumulate in water mains over the year. When hydrant flushing occurs in your neighborhood, you may notice a slight discoloration in the water from your faucet. This discoloration consists primarily of harmless silt and air and does not affect the water's safety. If this happens, simply run your cold water tap for three to five minutes. You should always avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear.Unidirectional flushing is the most effective method for cleaning our distribution system and serves as an important supplement to the annual flushing program. The Utilities Department has prepared a map for customers to check and verify if they are within the flushing area.
