Hickenlooper Statement on President Trump’s State of the Union

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper released the following statement rejecting President Trump's State of the Union address and the falsehoods the President spread during his speech:

"Try as he might, Trump can't erase what we see with our own eyes. Working families are struggling to afford groceries and health care. Small businesses are crushed under illegal tariffs. Trump is attacking Colorado's clean drinking water and withholding child care funding, just for petty political revenge. And ICE is grabbing, beating, and even killing people across the country.

"Under Donald Trump, the ultra-wealthy have gotten all the breaks while working Americans are getting worked over. That is the state of our union."

Throughout the speech, Hickenlooper repeatedly called out the lies that the President tried to spread.

Earlier today, Hickenlooper and his State of the Union guest, Caroline Dias Goncalves, highlighted the cruelty of the President's immigration crackdown. Dias Goncalves is a 20-year-old Dreamer who was detained by ICE in Colorado last year and a student at the University of Utah. Last June, Dias Goncalves was pulled over during a traffic stop in Colorado, where she was arrested by ICE and detained in the Aurora ICE detention facility for 15 days. Dias Goncalves is a Dreamer and raised in the U.S. since she was seven years old. Hickenlooper, his office, and organizations like TheDream.US were involved in demanding answers from ICE about Dias Goncalves' arrest and ensuring that Dias Goncalves was released.
