On Wednesday 6 May 2026, community members and dignitaries gathered for the Family and Domestic Violence Community Remembrance Vigil, to honour and remember those who have lost their lives to domestic or family violence.
Roses were distributed to attendees and then placed in front of commemorative placards that bore the names of the women and children lost to domestic and family violence since January 2025.
The vigil was conducted in High Cross Park, Randwick. Attendees included Randwick City Council Mayor Dylan Parker, local Federal member Matt Thistlethwaite MP, Randwick City Councillors, Prince of Wales hospital workers, members of the NSW Police, Randwick City Council workers and the Eastern Suburbs Domestic Violence Network.
Speaking to the crowd, Mayor Parker noted the generational ripple effect that domestic and family violence. Mr Thistlethwaite echoed the sentiments and urged men to call out instances of disrespect that can lead to serious violence.
The Family and Domestic Violence Community Remembrance Vigil falls during Domestic Violence Prevention Month.
Randwick City Council supports local legal and police services to victims of family and domestic violence, and funds counselling and accommodation. It also organises the Step Out Speak Out Walk, an awareness-raising march held in collaboration with NSW Police Eastern Beaches Local Command, which will occur in November 2026.
