DFD, DEN and DOTI break ground on new bond-funded Fire Station No. 40

DENVER - Sept. 10, 2025 - The Denver Fire Department (DFD), Denver International Airport (DEN), and the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) celebrated the groundbreaking of Fire Station No. 40 today, near E. 56 Avenue and Peña Boulevard. DFD Fire Station No. 40 is supported by $19.8M in funding from the Elevate Denver GO Bond, which voters approved in 2017.

"Every Denver family deserves to know that when there's an emergency, help will arrive quickly. Thanks to Denver voters, Fire Station 40 will give families in Green Valley Ranch, Montbello, and Gateway peace of mind knowing first responders are close by when every second counts," Mayor Mike Johnston said. "Through the Elevate Denver bond and future bonds, we will continue investing dollars in critical infrastructure to make our communities stronger and safer for generations to come."

The station will be constructed on a 5.48-acre site east of Peña Blvd, north of 56th Ave and adjacent to First Creek. The new station will sit on land owned by DEN and leased to DFD through an intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for an initial period of 20 years.

"The Denver Fire Department is committed to providing top-tier emergency services to DEN and the surrounding growing communities in the City & County of Denver," Denver Fire Chief Desmond Fulton said. "Denver International Airport is not only one of the busiest airports in the country, but also a critical hub for national and international travel. The safety of millions of travelers and airport personnel remains one of our highest priorities. Denver Fire maintains highly trained personnel and specialized equipment on-site to ensure a rapid, effective response to any emergency, whether it's an aircraft incident, a medical emergency, or a structure fire. We are proud of our dedicated firefighters who continue to uphold our mission of Desire to Serve, Courage to Act, and Ability to Perform. This expansion reflects our commitment to both current residents and the future of Denver."

The station will help address the growth around the airport, serving neighborhoods in the far northeast area, including the Gateway Neighborhood, Montbello and Green Valley Ranch. The station will augment neighborhood safety, allowing for quicker response time to emergency incidents in the community and meeting National Fire Protection Association standards. The station will feature three bays, housing shifts for up to eight firefighters, and for the first time in Denver, provisions for Advanced Life Support (ALS) to be housed at the station.

"It is a proud moment to add another Denver Fire Station on DEN's property, especially one that will not only serve the growth around the airport but also the surrounding communities and the Peña Boulevard corridor," DEN CEO Phil Washington said. "Peña Boulevard is critical to DEN's operational success and maintaining a safe corridor is vital to keeping DEN running smoothly and efficiently."
