Fraud Watch: Tech Support Scams Are on the Rise – Here’s What to Watch For

Having trouble with your computer? Be cautious. You may be the target of a tech support scam-a growing crime that cost Americans over $1.3 billion in 2023, with older adults most often targeted.

How the scam starts:

You might see a pop-up warning about a virus or critical issue on your device. It may ask you to call a toll-free number, claiming to be from Microsoft, Apple, or another tech company. These fake warnings may even lead to realistic-looking websites designed to mimic real support pages.

Once you're on the phone, the scammer will often ask you to install software like AnyDesk, giving them full remote access to your device. From there, they may:

  • Steal sensitive information
  • Install malware disguised as antivirus software
  • Pressure you into paying through your online bank or cryptocurrency

How to avoid this scam:

  • Never trust pop-ups, emails, or calls you didn't initiate.
  • Never allow someone remote access to your device unless you know and trust them.
  • Go directly to official websites for tech support-ask a trusted friend or family member if you're unsure.
  • Watch for poor grammar or strange wording in messages or conversations.
  • Avoid saving banking passwords directly on your computer.

If you suspect a scam:

  • Contact your bank or credit union immediately.
  • Take your device to a reputable local repair company to remove any malicious software.
  • Report the scam to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
  • Contact law enforcement-reporting helps protect others.
