Cipher Digital (CIFR) stock lost 52.8% between October 1 and October 30, 2026, ending at its lowest close of the past year while the S&P 500 slipped just 1.1%. The decline occurred alongside broader market calm, leaving anyone still holding the stock facing a harder question: what the stock does when the whole market sells off. How far has Cipher stock fallen in past market shocks?
Cipher Stock Has Fallen Much Further Than The Market
During the five market shocks it has traded through, Cipher took its hardest hit in the 2022 inflation shock, falling 83% compared to a 24% decline for the S&P 500. That descent included a one-day drop of more than a third on May 10, 2022. The 2025 tariff shock followed the same pattern, with Cipher dropping 65% while the S&P 500 fell 19%.
Cipher stock fell an average of 42.4% across all five shocks, compared to 13.4% for the S&P 500, and it fell further than the index in four of them. Based on that record, a market shock has hit Cipher stock about three times as hard as the S&P 500. The stock eventually recovered to its highest pre-fall close each time, requiring a median wait of 2.8 months from the low. The slowest return followed the 2022 low and took 8.7 months.
Revenue Is Down And Debt Is Up At Cipher
Revenue at Cipher fell 43.0% from a year earlier to $24.8 million in the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Management said on the August 4 call that revenue also fell from $35 million in the first quarter because Cipher had stopped bitcoin mining at its Black Pearl site as it moves toward contracted data center revenue. The company's operating loss widened to $72.6 million that quarter, compared to $28.1 million a year earlier.
As revenue shrank, Cipher's borrowing grew. Total debt reached about $5.6 billion at the end of June 2026, up from $189 million a year earlier.
The Pressures Building At Cipher Now
Building data centers is becoming more expensive for Cipher. On the August 4 call, management said it was seeing inflation across labor and equipment and expected its costs per megawatt to creep higher, although some leases pass that risk to the tenant. Cipher spent about $400 million on capital projects in the second quarter alone.
Power for Cipher's Texas sites also remains unsettled. News reports in September 2026 said Cipher had secured conditional grid classifications for 3.2 gigawatts of Texas data center capacity, though those classifications fall short of letting the sites connect to the grid.
Cipher is still adding debt. On October 13, the company said it planned to sell $850.0 million of convertible notes due 2032 that pay no interest. It priced the offering on October 14. Interest expense reached $67 million in the second quarter, up from $59 million in the first, which management attributed to a full quarter of interest on the Black Pearl compute notes. Cipher is expected to report again in November 2026, and its interest expense is the figure to watch.
