Behind every diagnosis is a story unfolding in the lab. Medical laboratory professionals navigate complexity, uncover meaning in data, and bring clarity to moments that matter most. During Lab Week, we celebrate the science, skill, and heart their work brings to patient care.
Jump into these narratives for a deeper understanding of how laboratorians contribute to healthcare:
1. LabMind: A Podcast That Explores the Future of Laboratory Medicine
An Interview With Dr. Joe Wiencek: Reducing Waste in Clinical Laboratory Testing
Clinical laboratories play a critical role in patient care while also generating substantial waste, including single-use plastics, paper, and e-waste. Dr. Joseph Wiencek, associate professor of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, shares actionable strategies for improving sustainability through laboratory stewardship, recycling initiatives, and effective advocacy without compromising quality or safety.
2. Research and Innovation
"The Innovation Central Laboratory represents a bold step forward in diagnostic medicine," said Tracy George, MD, ARUP chief scientific officer and president of ARUP's Innovation Business Unit. "By building and validating tests that are truly commercial-ready, we're not just accelerating innovation, we're ensuring that groundbreaking diagnostics can be adopted in real-world laboratories to improve patient care globally."
3. Test Information
Dual-Target Molecular Measles Virus Assay Aids Response to Ongoing Outbreaks
The CDC reported 2,242 total confirmed measles virus cases for the year 2025. This represents the highest number of cases in a single year since 1992. ARUP Laboratories' dual-target molecular measles virus assay is the first commercially available reference test that both detects the measles virus and distinguishes between vaccine-related and wild-type strains of the virus. This differentiation helps providers quickly determine which cases are active infections so they can pursue the appropriate patient management strategies.
4. Magnify Magazine: The Art and Science of Diagnostic Medicine
ARUP Laboratories' Approach to Pediatric Testing
In this edition of Magnify, we highlight pediatric testing, with a special focus on rapid whole genome sequencing for critically ill newborns, genetic drivers in pediatric leukemia, and laboratory stewardship in children's hospitals.
5. Learn From the Experts: Continuing Education
ARUP's Institute for Learning offers a comprehensive catalog of more than 500 video lectures, spotlight videos, and podcasts and is a definitive resource for continuing education credit. Content is created by ARUP's medical directors, who are also faculty members at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah, along with other experts in laboratory medicine. Our online courses offer insight, in-depth analysis, and practical knowledge on the most relevant and emerging topics in laboratory medicine.
